Toni: California State Polytechnic University, Pomonas campus is beautiful! Located in Los Angeles County, its hard to wrap your mind around such a hidden gem. The campus is suburban with ample opportunity to get to Orange County or downtown LA quickly. The security on campus is great. There wasnt a moment I was too afraid to walk to classes. The university does offer security escorts for students and staff who would like to be accompanied during the day and at night. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Toni:What comes to mind is a professor who once said, The professors and staff will always be there for the students; the students need to utilize the staff because we do not beg you to come to our office hours. With this being said, the teaching staff and supporting staff are available either with open door policies or scheduling appointments to meet. Utilize the staff! How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Toni:When I was a freshman, I lived on the honors floor, which was amazing because it was quiet enough for me to study. The commons are incredibly close to the dorms and have great food options. The resident advisers are constantly preparing and putting on events for the students who live in the dorms. The suites are the other on-campus living option. They are farther from the commons, but the meal plan options encourage dining in that part of campus through the combination of meal plans and meal points. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Toni:The university is known for its design and engineering programs. I went to the university for hospitality management because the Collins College of Hospitality Management is well respected. California State Polytechnic University, Pomona prides itself on learning by doing, so all majors have a hands-on aspect intertwined into their classes. For example, instead of doing book work on how customer service should be done, we had to go to a hospitality establishment a minimum of three times and rate the service, leadership, and cleanliness based on a rubric we were presented. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Toni:Personally, I thought meeting people was going to be extremely hard because, at the time, I was extremely shy. However, the universitys activity services do a phenomenal job with icebreakers, putting on a variety of events, and encouraging student involvement. I made a core group of friends I still interact with daily. Greek life and non-Greek life is balanced. The Greeks dont shame non-Greeks for not being a part of their world. How helpful are the Career Centerand other student support services? Toni:Honestly, I never used the main Career Center because Collins College of Hospitality Management had a fabulous career coordinator who was constantly working with organizations, and even individuals, for career placement. California State Polytechnic University, Pomona has a large career fair for the main university, and then each college has their own fair where the participants are more specialized to the college. For instance, my college has a larger amount (and variety) of fine dining, 4- to 5-star hotel properties, and aviation recruitment than the main career fair offers. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Toni:The library is large enough that during midterm and final exam season there are seats for everyone. There are multiple student unions, all of which offer free printing, ample seating, and community. The best part is you dont have to belong to a center group to use the facilities. Everyone is welcomed in each union! Describe the surrounding town. Toni:If youre looking for a traditional college town, thats not Pomona. The area is mostly industrial. Downtown Pomona is artsy with a great food scene and a couple of galleries. There is also a venue in downtown Pomona that some great acts have come through. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Toni:Its an average size. If youre looking to get lost in the crowd, this isnt it. The largest class is about 150 students (an introductory course), and the class sizes range from 30 students to 10 depending on the course. I loved the structure and size because I was able to develop relationships with people who were in every single class. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Toni:My most memorable moment was when I had a family member pass away right before finals, and my professors pushed my final exams back by a week to allow me to attend the funeral without worrying about missing class. Are you trying to figure out what subjects are on the ACT or SAT as well? College applications are often confusing and stressful, but you don’t have to worry. Let this be your guide to help you understand what subjects are on the ACT, how it is scored, and a few other crucial tips to success. It doesnt have to be overwhelming once you understand the basics of each of the tests. The ACT is divided into four, sometimes five sections â€" the writing test is optional, so it is important to check as some colleges or universities require its completion. English The 75 questions in English section are divided between five passages that you have to review and understand. This means that each passage has 15 questions related to it. Some questions will be linked to the passage as a whole, while others will be more specific and draw your attention  to a particular part of the passage. This is an area that makes many student nervous as there can be a wide range of topics in the passages. Some of the passages you might have more knowledge of than others. Just do the best you can with what youre offered, knowing that all the other students taking the test are facing the same topics. Science The science section of the ACT also revolves around passages. These passages will include graphs, diagrams, charts, and tables, followed by around four to seven questions. The questions will require you to gather the information presented in the passage and choose the most correct answer from the selection of four multiple choice responses. If you have trouble recalling scientific information, don’t worry, you are tested more on your skills and ability to analyze, evaluate and interpret, than you are on actual science-based information. Writing This optional section of the ACT requires you to read a small passage on a given topic and evaluate perspectives on the topic. You will need to show that you can analyze different arguments by forming different viewpoints and opinions into a coherent essay. Its important here to not only present a thoughtful response but to also present it well. Taking a bit of time to outline what your thoughts will be before you start writing can make this section a lot easier as well as get you better results. How is the ACT Scored? At first this may seem a little complicated, but it’s actually quite simple. It’s not quite as straightforward as recording how many questions you answered correctly â€" that would be really simple! But that is the first step. Basically, you get a mark for every correct answer, blank or incorrect answers receive no marks. This is called your raw score. Your raw score is then converted to your scaled score, which is a number between one and 36.   The reason the scores are scaled is to ensure results are consistent across tests taken on different dates and in different locations. Why I Volunteer - Annick and Lourdes's Story Meet Annick S and Lourdes D, two of Tutorfair’s lovely language volunteers. As respective native French and Spanish speakers, Annick and Lourdes have used their impressive language skills to tutor Senior students at Pimlico and Paddington Academy. We help them tell their stories below. Although the two tutors volunteered in different schools and in different subjects, both Annick and Lourdes are in the unique position of learning how to teach  a group of less-than-timid teens a language that has been innate for most of their lives. “I was a bit . . . a bit shocked,” Annick begins, recalling her first day at Pimlico Academy. “[The students] don’t sit down, they’re not quiet, and they’re very tiring.” Annick reminds me of some of my own favorite High School educators: patient enough to teach, with a no-nonsense attitude that suggests that you listen. Carefully. “But,” she continues, “as they get to know you and you get to know them, you find some middle ground. You learn to take it as it comes, and if you don’t think of a solution or a way to do it better, you let [the students] get on with it. Then you go back in a few minutes and maybe they will get it. Maybe there is progress.” When I speak to Lourdes a couple weeks later, I am struck by the parallels between her and Annick’s experiences, right down to their first day. Lourdes remembers, “I went to class, and the teacher introduced me to the students who had more difficulty. The teacher said, ‘Don’t be afraid because their behavior is not so good,’ but it was fine with me because I used to work with difficult children. I understand that sometimes they’re difficult, and that’s okay. I just like to work with them.” In these few sentences, Lourdes exemplifies a quiet kind of perseverance, and immense dedication to her students. When I ask her what motivated her to reach outside of her comfort zone and become a volunteer tutor, she says simply, “The children.” “They are special, they are innocent, they are funny, and I have fun with them. Sometimes it is difficult, but you have to give your time, because it will make you feel like a better person, too. These children are the future.” Despite her earlier reservations, when I ask Annick the same question she remains focused on her pupils, too. Her favorite part? “The interaction with the students,” she says. “Opening their mind to other things, and showing them there is more around that they could explore.” It’s easy to see why these two make such fantastic volunteers, isn’t it? FranceThe magnificent Alps draw thousands of avid skiers from around the globe every year, and it’s easy to see why. The French also take apres-ski very seriously and end a day on the slopes by enjoying fondue, cured meats and wine with friends.Schools in France normally expect their ESL teachers to have a few years’ experience of teaching English to children. Basic French language skills are also considered a bonus, but this is not essential. There are short and long term opportunities with adult private language schools in Lyon and Marseille and the surrounding commuter towns, which are within reach of popular skiing areas. RussiaSince the recent surge in international visitors and the current Winter Olympics, government a nd businesses alike have identified the value of the tourist, resulting in an increased adult interest in learning English. English tuition has also begun to be introduced more widely into mainstream schools and as a result, there is a growing demand for ESL instructors across this vast and varied country.Russia’s premier ski region and Winter Olympic host city, Sochi, can be found in the southwest hook of the country, along the coastline of the Black Sea. Parts of this area of the stunning Caucasus mountain range regularly see seasonal snowfall of around 14m. It is hoped that the huge investment in resort infrastructure will help Russia on it’s way to becoming a prestigious alternative European ski destination.
